from nottingham to london with love
every town has its ups and downs
sometimes ups outnumber the downs
Sheltered is a good way to describe the youngest of the Cooper line. She was born on a cold November evening to a couple hiding a secret that could cost all of them their lives. You see, Coopers always come in twos, and Jade was not an only child. She was born with a brother, Malachite, who also shared her gift. It had been centuries since a Cooper male had been born with a gift, and to keep them from muddying down the family line, all males were killed. Coopers didn't take husbands, they took temporary mates. Once the pregnancy took, the men were snuffed out. Male children were snuffed out after birth, and a Cooper woman who was unable to produce a single female offspring was snuffed out as well.
but not in nottingham
Ruby Cooper, though, had a secret. She had fallen in love. She'd married in a secret ceremony not long after Jade and Malachite were conceived. The death of Robert Winchester and the 'unnamed' male offspring were faked. Wards. False walls. Home schooling. Seclusion. Ruby did everything to protect her perfect little family. And it worked. And it continued to work as the twins grew. How sad it was for Ruby Cooper who could only bear one child instead of two, and that her daughter was so... So... different.
i'm inclined to believe
if we weren't so down, we'd up and leave
Jade and Malachite were very close growing up. She knew how special her brother was, and she knew that they'd all be killed if the elders found out about him or their father. Not long after she had turned sixteen, she'd become one of the Chosen. It floored her, really. She had cousins who were better Coopers than she was. Who looked for men to mate with to breed more cooper females. Jade did not. She was the black sheep; her mother's line was a whole group of black sheep. And yet, she was the one who had been Chosen. The gift ran strong in this line, and Jade was the one who had to represent in the Council.

we'd up and fly if we had wings for flyin'
can't you see the tears we're cryin'?
She transferred from her quiet life in Nottingham to Shepherd University in London so that she could be closer to the rest of the Council members; the rest of the Chosen. She had the chance to live her life away from the close, watchful eye of her mother for the first time in her life. Freedom is an odd thing. It came with a world of opportunity, but also with a world of danger. When things become overwhelming, the young Cooper turns to her first love: music.

can't there be some happiness for me?
Coming into her own and finding herself has been quite the experience for Jade. She's had ups and downs, but she's really learned a lot about herself along the way. ... Like how good it feels to go against the outdated ideals of your family. All it takes is one spark to change everything. Ruby set the spark in motion, and Jade -- along with Malachite's help -- are hellbent to change tradition and break away from the orthodox matriarchy that has left so many broken homes. With any hope, she'll make it out of this alive.
