Everywhere we go, we're the kings and queens and we run this city.
The best thing about Mackie is that she just does not give a good goddamn. She doesn't. She's not callous or mean. In fact, she's quite friendly, and is always ready to lend an ear and some advice and a big hug to a friend in need. And everyone is Mackie's friend. Unless you're Will Byrne, but he's a dick so who cares.
But she just does not care. She doesn't care for societal norms. She wasn't raised with them until she was ten, after all. She was left free to roam about her parents' earth ship in Taos, a tiny naked child scampering about in the desert sun, laughing, chasing lizards and roadrunners until she learned to become them.
Nobody knows how Mackie became a shapeshifter. She was born to normal human parents. Her mother claims it's the peyote she indulged in the night she conceived. "My little child of the earth," she always says, so proudly. "In tune with the ebb and flow of nature."
When she was ten, her grandmother took her to Albuquerque to receive a formal education. Mackie has come far since the days of being practically illiterate. She graduated with a high GPA and a scholarship to the University of New Mexico, but the acceptance letter to St. Brigid's promised so much more in a far-away setting.
It was a mistake. She never should have gone. She came back with nightmares, to a dying grandmother who left her everything. All of her grandmother's copious inheritance will belong to Mackie the day she receives her bachelor's degree in her chosen field.
Until then, Mackie lives a charmed sort of life. She's returned to England to continue her studies. With some of her old friends from her previous school, a slew of new ones, and the peculiar affections of a boy named Cross, there's nothing she can't conquer. Nothing.
